to meet the foreign exchange costs of our forces in Germany, and the

nature and timing of our approach to WEU and NATO. In the forthcoming

discussions with the United States and Federal German Governments we should

not indicate our willingness to accept a solution involving the withdrawal of two brigades which left a substantial part of our foreign exchange costs uncovered, nor should we at this stage seek the agreement of the Americans

to giving notice to the troops and families in view of the damaging

repercussions this might have on any approach we night later make to WEU.

The Committee

Agreed that the necessary expenditure should now be incurred on the rehabilitation of camps and the provision of family accommodation in the United Kingdon to accommodate two brigades and four RAF squadrons from Germany.

(2) Invited the Joint Parlianentary Secretary, Ministry of

Housing and Local Government (Mr. Mellish) to arrange for the Ministerial Committee on the Provision of Accommodation for Service Families to consider and approve plans for the housing of the families of two brigades and four RAF squadrons from Germany.

Invited the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs

(Mr. Thonson) in his forthcoming discussions with the United States and Federal German Governments to be guided by the points made in discussion and in the Prime Minister's summing up.

(4) Agreed to resume their discussion of the withdrawal of

forces from Germany, the giving of notice to the troops concerned and the timing and tactics of any approach to WEU in the light of the outcome of the tripartite talks.
